The city was founded in the 13th century by the Ascanian dynasty. During the Reformation, Dessau became a Protestant city. The city was heavily damaged during the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century. In the 18th century, Dessau was the capital of the principality of Anhalt-Dessau. The school was led by famous architects and designers such as Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
